The new TESLA.45 driver for Beyerdynamic’s latest studio headphones is revealed

More news coming out of NAMM 2025 being held in Anaheim. This time, it’s audio brand beyerdynamic with the announcement of its new TESLA.45 driver in two new pairs of high-end studio headphones.

The DT 1770 PRO MKII closed-back headphones and the DT 1990 PRO MKII open-back headphones from beyerdynamic were unveiled at NAMM 2025. Both models feature improved comfort, improved sound quality and a newly developed TESLA.45 dynamic driver . These flagship models offer enhanced flexibility for music professionals.

As modern music production becomes more demanding, the DT 1770 PRO MKII and DT 1990 PRO MKII are headphones designed with flexibility and sound quality at their core. With a new resistance of 30 Ω, the headphones can be inserted into a wide range of playback devices, without compromising sound quality.

New TESLA.45 driver for cleaner sound

The sound produced by the DT 1770 PRO MKII and DT 1990 PRO MKII belongs to the newly developed TESLA.45 driver. Manufactured at beyerdynamic’s headquarters in Heilbronn, Germany, the diaphragm cuts distortion and sharpens response, preventing ear fatigue during long recording sessions and delivering a clearer sound compared to its predecessor.

The driver membrane is made from a high-performance PEEK polymer that produces a deep and precise bass, while a lighter voice coil made from aluminum-coated copper wire smoothes the treble frequencies. Each driver is tested several times during production to ensure consistent sound quality.

The DT 1770 PRO MKII and DT 1990 PRO MKII models have lower total harmonic distortion for a cleaner signal with more precision. Both headphones offer a more balanced treble response without sharp spikes while maintaining high detail and clarity throughout the upper frequency range, which can help significantly with critical mixing decisions.

All-day comfort and sturdy construction

With a closed design, the DT 1770 PRO MKII headphones are aimed at people who record, monitor and edit music. The lively sound profile has a powerful deep bass. Compared to the previous model, the frequency response is smoother in the upper mids and the higher frequencies are more balanced, making the DT 1770 PRO MKII a versatile tool for the studio setup. The closed-back design effectively suppresses background noise and reduces microphone leakage, making them suitable for focused work.

Designed for mixing, mastering and editing, the DT 1990 PRO MKII headphones have a natural and wide soundstage with precise bass response, even in the lowest octaves. With the DT 1990 PRO MKII, beyerdynamic reduced the highs to 8kHz, while still maintaining the detailed 10kHz levels found in the previous model to help prevent users from making critical mixing mistakes. The treble has also been scaled down slightly from the previous model to provide a more balanced sound profile.

Both the DT 1770 PRO MKII and DT 1990 PRO MKII are designed for optimal comfort during long mixing and editing sessions. The flexible spring steel headband, which is made from a combination of memory foam and durable leather, has a fontanel cutout to prevent pressure and discomfort on top of the wearer’s head.

Replaceable headphones and headband

As many producers and sound engineers know, in-ear headphones take a beating with natural wear and tear from repeated use. Because of this, beyerdynamic says it designed the DT 1770 PRO MKII and DT 1990 PRO MKII with interchangeability in mind. Both models feature fully replaceable headbands and earmuffs, ensuring they remain a staple in any studio for many years to come.

The DT 1770 PRO MKII is equipped with a selection of leather and velor ear pads. The DT 1990 PRO MKII comes with two different types of velor ear pads. One is a Producing Velor that produces a fuller, more exciting sound with a slight bass boost. This can help kickstart the creation process before you move on to mixing. The other headphones are made of Mixing & Mastering Velour, which provides a more analytical sound for making final mixing decisions.

The DT 1770 PRO MKII and DT 1990 PRO MKII are shipped with a 3m detachable cable and a 5m coiled cable for studio use. Each pair is equipped with a locked 3-pin mini-XLR connector. Both headphones come with a dedicated hard case for protection during travel. USB-C cables are available separately for music creators looking to connect directly to laptops, smartphones, tablets and more.

Price and availability: The DT 1770 PRO MKII and DT 1990 PRO MKII are available today for $599.99 at the beyerdynamic e-store and Amazon.
